Key Doctrinal Questions: What Translation or Version   of The Bible should we use?  The Holy Bible, The B-I-B-L-E, Dead or Alive?

Does the Bible, The Holy Bible; The Holy Scriptures; The Word of GOD; The Old Testament & The New Testament; The Living Word; The Law, the Prophets, the Psalms, & the New Covenant; The BOOK of Books; The Book Above All Books; GOD's Word; The Truth of GOD.... matter?  Does faithfully maintaining, publishing, and communicating GOD's Word/The Holy Bible matter?  If it does, why does it?  If it does, have we done so?  If not, what can we expect to receive for our failure to do so?

What of the so-called "Living Bible"?

Imagine for a moment, that you presume to take it upon yourself to rewrite the Holy Bible (for noble reasons of course).  Later you undertake to publish your masterpiece; ah yes, but the name to call it by must be carefully chosen so that it will stand out from the Bibles before it, so it will sell successfully; then too, there is the matter of the rest of the packaging for your book, ah "Bible."  After much deep soul searching it is determined that to enjoy the most success (sales) your poetic rewrite of the Bible should by all means incorporate the name Bible in it's name (for the sake of credibility), and that the book should be offered in leather binding (perhaps with gold leaf...) the better to look just like christians expect a Bible to look, and it should be published and promoted by a known Bible publisher, voila, The Living Bible.

My how modest, humble, and truthful an undertaking, and how God-honoring too; until you changed the Bible it was DEAD, but now it's Living, you must be greater than GOD Himself because you have brought GOD's Dead Bible to LIFE!  Of course we know it is very important to have endorsements from the right people, so who better for this promotional purpose than the likes of Billy Graham....  Isn't it interesting how instrumental Billy Graham has been in promoting the wide acceptance of corruptions of GOD's Word, assisting them in supplanting GOD's Word; what an Evangelist, what a Great Man of God.  Of course no one dares speak amiss of Dr. Graham lest they be accused of "touching the Lord's anointed...."  Billy perhaps started well, long ago; he has had a 'great' career, and a 'great' life; but, as for his "legacy," I for one would not care to answer for it.  And what his place will be in the Kingdom of GOD, God only knows.

There you have it, one man's paraphrase of the Bible, one man's "creative" rewrite of the Bible, not a God-inspired Lutherian undertaking, nor what William Tyndale sacrificed his life for in order to bring GOD's Word faithfully to the people, but instead a thoroughly contemporary corruption of the Word of God, for a thoroughly contemporary corruption of the Church!

What could this book have more reasonably been titled:

The Holey Babel; One Man's Opinion of the Bible; One Man's Interpretation of the Bible; A Modern Day Paraphrase of the Bible; Taking Poetic License with the Bible; One Man's Re-write of the Bible; Playing Fast & Loose With the Bible; A bible for Dear Ann & Dear Abby; Pseudo-Bible; Dumbing Down the Bible...A Bible of the People, by the People, and for the People....  Call it what you will, it is not The Bible, it is not The Holy Bible, it is a fraud and a lie misrepresenting itself as GOD's Holy Blood-bought Word.

Dear Ones, there is a price to pay for adding to God's Word, and subtracting from God's Word; it's an eternal price, as well it should be, because it not only is the most grievous sin against GOD the Father, GOD the Son, and GOD the Holy Ghost, who authored the Holy Bible, but against vast multitudes of people for whom Christ came and suffered and died to save; those who touch the LORD's anointed Word to alter it, to diminish it, to change it, to 'improve on God,' to make it more positive, more acceptable, more comfortable, more good feeling...will suffer eternal loss, along with those they divert to Hell, this is according to GOD's Word, Revelation 22:18,19.  Is it possible to commit such sin 'well-intendedly,' perhaps, but not without suffering eternal loss, and occasioning such loss by others!

Libraries, and the well-read man.  What can be said of the relative worth of the Bible?  You and I would be infinitely better off with a library consisting of only the Holy Bible, than with a library consisting of every book ever written but no Bible (in this example I am not presupposing there being no Bible ever having been written, and therefore no books about the Bible, nor about Jesus Christ, nor about Theology...NO, I am contrasting a library stocked with All books which have ever actually been written, including those written about the Bible, those about Jesus Christ, those concerned with Theology;  and I say unequivocally, you and I would be infinitely better off with a library consisting of only the Bible, versus having a library stocked with every book ever written except for the one indispensable Book of Books, the very Word of God, the Holy Bible.

But to those who would be tempted to leap to the conclusion that I am against books, my counsel is not to leap, as I am for good books ( i.e., those books which diligently pursue truth and righteousness, instead of lies and corruptness).

Permit me to include a brief excerpt from a great of the faith concerning the value of reading the Holy Bible as compared and contrasted with reading christian books.

George Mueller - Answers to Prayer

"Like many believers, I practically preferred, for the first four years of my divine life, the works of uninspired men to the oracles of the living God.  The consequence was that I remained a babe, both in knowledge and grace. In knowledge I say; for all true knowledge must be derived by the Spirit, from the Word.  And as I neglected the Word, I was for nearly four years so ignorant that I did not clearly know even the fundamental points of our holy faith.  And this lack of knowledge most sadly kept me from walking steadily in the ways of God.

"For it is the truth that makes us free (John 8:31-32), by delivering us from the slavery of the lusts of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.  The Word proves it.  The experience of the saints proves it; and also my own experience most decidedly proves it.  For when it pleased the Lord in August 1829 to bring me really to the Scriptures, my life and walk became very different.  And though ever since that I have very much fallen short of what I might and ought to be, yet, by the grace of God, I have been enabled to live much nearer to Him than before.

"If any believers read this who prefer other books to the Holy Scriptures, and who enjoy the writings of men much more than the Word of God, may they be warned by my loss.  I shall consider this book to have been the means of doing much good, should it please the Lord, through its instrumentality, to lead some of His people no longer to neglect the Holy Scriptures, but to give them (the Holy Scriptures) the preference, which they have hitherto bestowed on the writings of men.

"My dislike to increase the number of books would have been sufficient to deter me from writing these pages had I not been convinced that this is the only way in which the brethren at large may be benefited through my mistakes and errors, and been influenced by the hope that, in answer to my prayers, the reading of my experience may be the means of leading them to value the Scriptures more highly and to make them the rule of all their actions."

Ah yes, and what Bible do you suppose George Mueller would recommend for reading, study, and meditation, not to mention preaching and teaching?  Do you imagine that he would concur with Dr. Billy Graham in recommending the "Living Bible," the "Good News for Modern Man," or the "New International Version"?  Next time you have the opportunity to see Dr. Graham or his son Franklin in an evangelistic "crusade" note the music featured, and ask yourself whether the likes of George Mueller would concur with their way of doing things.  Perhaps George Mueller and greats of the faith like him are not your benchmark, fine, Mueller would not have you look to him as a standard, but rather would exhort you to look to Jesus Christ as the Standard for belief, faith, behaviour, obedience....  So, ask yourself, would Jesus Christ concur with Billy Graham's and Franklin Graham's way of doing things?  If not, should you?

The Authorized Version - AV, frequently called the King James Version - KJV

An excerpt from The Epistle Dedicatory

"So that if, on the one side, we shall be traduced by Popish Persons at home or abroad, who therefore will malign us, because we are poor instruments to make God's holy Truth to be yet more and more known unto the people, whom they desire still to keep in ignorance and darkness; or if, on the other side, we shall be maligned by selfconceited Brethren, who run their own ways, and give liking unto nothing, but what is framed by themselves, and hammered on their anvil; we may rest secure, supported within by the truth and innocency of a good conscience, having walked the ways of simplicity and integrity, as before the Lord; and sustained without by the powerful protection of Your Majesty's grace and favour, which will ever give countenance to honest and Christian endeavours against bitter censures and uncharitable imputations."

Interestingly these godly men who described themselves as poor instruments, were anything but, they were in fact as outstanding a collection of God-fearing, God-honouring, Holy Spirit anointed scholars as has been gathered; and they were mightily used by God to make His Holy Word accessible to the people.  But true to what they wrote in the Epistle Dedicatory, they have been maligned by conceited self-honouring theologians who deceive the people, and this maligning has taken place for centuries.

Perhaps you imagine the King James Bible is inaccessible for people during these contemporary times and that "modern" translations, versions, rewrites of the Bible are needed if "modern" people are to read and understand the Bible.  But a question: does dumbing down the Bible make it more understandable, more comprehensible, and thus more enlightening?  Or does dumbing down the Bible serve to confuse the people and render the Bible less useful, less life-saving, less life-giving?  The truth is that the Holy Word of God, as rendered in modern translations and versions, has been corrupted by people who have not feared God nor been called by God to the work of translating His Holy Word.

* Not to be confused with the so-called New King James Versions, which falsely claim to be virtually the same as the KJV!

[As you can see, this chapter has a long way to go.]
